Hi Mara:

Thanks for clarifying the question. The way I see it is that the specific
assessments (standardized or otherwise) that any OT uses in the practise setting is
really dependent on what kind of healthcare setting and
population one is working in, what your assessment goals are, and the assessment an OT
is familiar with or would like to become familiar with. So there is no straight
answer to your question.

For example I work in a mental health setting and since a major part of my work
focuses on testing for independent living, I find that typically I use the following
standardized assessments:

The Kohlman Evaluation of Living Skills (KELS) (Standardized for Geriatric and
Psychiatric populations)

Allen's Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS) (Standarized for Physically and Cognitively
Disabled populations, this includes psychiatric clients)

Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) requires certification (Its
standardization is self evident in the name of the Ax).

However, when I assess home safety I may use the SAFER Tool meant to assess safety in
the home. Or on the odd occasion I might use a relevant section of the
Bruinninks-Oserretsky (BOTMP) to assess shoulder and forearm
movement for specific kinds of tasks (e.g. use of a keyboard).

To answer your question, what assessments are used out in the real world, well this
largely depends upon whom you speak to, in conjunction with what I said in the first
paragraph above. Incidentally the COPM is a criterion
based individualized outcome measure of *changes* in a client's self-perception if her
or his occupational performance. I have used it on occasion, usually when I am
working with a client whose family may think the client
has priorities that are different from theirs, and they would like me to give priority
to what *they* think I should be working on. COPM helps me to clarify goals and
measure the client's progress along different goals.

Hope this is helpful to you in some measure.

Best wishes,

Biraj
