Hi Mara
I work with individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury. I always
use standardized tests (minimum 4) to evaluate cognition, as well as
clinical observations of how the tests are performed/approached (which is
how OT differs from neuropsychology) and the impact of cognitive physical
and psychosocial dysfunction on the individual's specific occupations.
Standardized tests give valuable information in certain areas, however, the
purpose of OT being to return the individual to functional occupations, the
"how" is as important as the scores, if not more important. The
standardized tests in attention for example provide information to implement
grading at even a very subtle level as is necessary with mild brain injury,
particularly when returning to high level occupation. So I guess what I'm
saying is it is well worth your while to learn about standardized
assessments not only the proper administration, but how to interpret and
analyze all the information provided by the client (not just scores). Every
setting will use different tests; in my opinion what is important to learn
as a student is how to approach standardized testing and how to maximize the
information you gain from it to the client's benefit.

Subject: [OTnow] Assessment question clarification

Hi Biraj:

Sorry, I'm not being too clear am I! I was curious to know what
standardized assessments you used to evaluate a patient. I wondered what
assessments I'm learning aboutin my schooling right now, like the

Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), The Sensory Integration
and Praxis Tests (SIPT), The Bruinninks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency,
or the Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA)

are used out in the field. Or are standardized assessments not used often
at your facility?

Thanks

Mara
