Subject: RE: [NeuroPT ] Pathfinding/Wayfinding
Hi, Josh-
I use the EFRT from Solberg and Mateer in their book titled: Cognitive
Rehabilitation. In their chapter on Executive Function, they describe an
Executive Route-Finding Task (EFRT) which combines naturalistic observation
and standardized assessement. They describe four distinct approaches to
route finding:
1) "Wandering Aimlessly" - non-directed, non-systematic walking around the
facility
2) "Trial and Error" - guessing about the location and using a gradual
process of
elimination.
3) "Step-by-Step" - asking for information limited to the next closest
location.
4) "Strategy Use" - obtaining a map or written directions.
After evaluating initial pathfinding abilities, I can generate my functional
goals for route finding using the hierarchy above.
At our facility, both PT and SLP coordinate and address this issue.

Subject: [NeuroPT ] Pathfinding/Wayfinding
We are trying to improve our evaulation and treatment of
pathfinding/wayfinding impairments. If anyone has any helpful info or feels
they can answer any of the below questions, we would appreciate it.
1. Is there an assessment, or formalized process that addresses pathfinding
and
community safety? (Besides the Community Integration Program)
2. Which discipline(s) address pathfinding and community safety issues-- For
example, when a patient is judged safe to leave the (inpatient rehab) unit
wihtout supervision, who helps make the decision and how?
3. Do you have or know of any good pathfinding/wayfinding treatment
plans or progressions that have been successful?
Thank you,
