Suzi, A good way to increase you business at that facility will be to work your way into the FCE/Work hardening programs. Who better than an OT to analyze a persons ability to return to work? Most FCEs are rather biomechanical and look mostly at physical capabilities as it relates to the return to work decision. An OT's ability to analyze and modify occupational tasks can be a marvelous addition to this type of assessment. In the work program you may be able to assist with making the program more realistic in terms of the jobs it is attempting to return the workers to. PT work programs tend again to focus on biomechanical issues (i.e. you see people lifting boxes, pushing a sled and running wire through and overhead chain). This might improve strength, ROM and tolerance to activity, but unless your work consists of lifting boxes, pushing sleds and running wire through overhead chains, it doesn't really reflect the true nature of what a work program is supposed to be.
As for OT evaluation. I don't believe that a standardized tool is necessary. You may consider the COPM as a way to make sure you are functioning as an "occupational" therapist. The Barthel Index is a good tool for placing a numerical value on the ability to complete basic ADL http://www.strokecenter.org/trials/scales/barthel.pdf The Quebec Back Pain Disability Questionnaire is a good way to document the effects of back pain on basic tasks: http://www.workcover.vic.gov.au/dir090/vwa/home.nsf/pages/outcomes/$file/quebec_scale.pdf If you will do ergonomics consulting you may like this: http://www.ergonetz.de/bildschirm/downloads/checkliste_e.pdf I'm not certain what else to offer you. Maybe some others on the list will respond with help. New to outpatient Jimmie, Thanks for your reply. I believe the census will be a mixture of neuro, ortho... I don't think I will be asked to do any FCE's at this point. No one has mentioned this to me, but it is something I will look into. This is a private clinic that has dealt mainly with PT/work hardening up until this point but has begun to get some requests for OT evals/treatments recently and they are hoping to increase the OT caseload. Therefore, they don't really have much to use for OT treatment and no standardized evaluations, but they are willing to order anything that I feel would be needed. So any suggestions there would also be helpful. My first evaluation is on a TIA (hemi). Hope this gives a little more info. New to outpatient Hey Suzi, It might be helpful if you give everyone more information about the facility, what type of patients do they generally see, what will be your duties, etc? Will it be a hospital outpatient department or a free standing clinic? Will the census be neuro, orhto, a mix? By the use of the term "sports rehab facility" I would assume you are referring to a privately owned clinic. Will you be required to provide functional capacity evaluations? New to outpatient I am currently a practicing pediatric OT and have been asked to do some PRN work for an outpatient rehab/sports rehab facility. They have no other OT's on site so I have no one to consult with so.I am needing some input. I have found some information from books and websites, but was curious to what other therapists are actually using/doing in clinics. I need input on: 1) what types of evals do you usually use 2) what areas do you concentrate on in outpatient (continuation of inpatient, home safety, ADL's.) 3) suggestions for treatment strategies And anything else that might be helpful. I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions from anyone. Thank you in advance for any input. Suzi -- Unsubscribe?
