I have worked as a contractor for an agency that had contracts with school districts and with an agency that ran Head Start in a county. Normally you don't get benefits hence higher hourly pay. You can also contract for facilities or school districts directly and may be able to negotiate for benefits. Often if you are a contractor you have to pay taxes as a sole proprietor which means you have to pay all of your own social security taxes. usually you pay half and your employer pays half. Another way to have more freedom is to work prn. That way the facility is your employer and pays for social security taxes and deducts the normal taxes from your paycheck. Good luck.
