Hello Al:

I have a small solo practice providing in-home rehab. It has been a
struggle to get referrals for two simple reasons:

1. I provide only OT

2. There is an already established network of referrals, primarily for
PT.

I am also interested in expanding into low vision rehab but I'm not sure
of it feasibility and the financial benefit.

There is much to consider with starting your own business. Everything
from deciding your form deciding your business entity (LLC, sole
proprietor, PA, corporation, etc) to deciding on whether to be a Medicare
provider.

Have you already joined the OT in Private Practice Yahoo group? You may
be able to get more help there.

The address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/otnpp

Subj: [OTlist] new practice

amJ> Hello,

amJ> I am requesting some help/suggestions from members if they would be so kind
amJ> to take a moment. I have been practicing for 5 years, with 3 of them years
amJ> as a rehab director of a small team of seven in a skilled nursing facility.

amJ> Lately, I have felt more and more of an urge to step out on my own and
begin
amJ> a private practice within my small community. The only competition I would
amJ> have is the local hospital, one out-pt center, and the local nursing homes.

amJ> I had initially thought of trying to get an out-pt facility going. I
amJ> recently was reading in one of the Advance magazines, that low vision was
amJ> the top ranked emerging practice area. We have no one that I know of in my
amJ> community providing low vision rehab.

amJ> I was considering taking a course by Mary Warren and possibly trying to
amJ> begin a practice in the area of low vision.

amJ> Here is the problem. I have no idea on what it takes to begin a practice.
amJ> This is definitely new ground for me. I am hoping that I can get some
amJ> suggestions on resources that will help lead me in the right direction in
amJ> creating a practice of my own. I need to learn everything from billing, to
amJ> running a business in general.

amJ> Thanks in advance,

amJ> Al Morrow
