In once again reading the original message, one sentence sort of stood
out. The therapist stated:

quote> I am amazed of how many doctors will order PT for shoulder
quote> injuries.

This sentence points out what I think is another "strange thing" about
our profession. In many physical dysfunction settings, OT's treat upper
extremities and PT's treat lower extremities. I know this has come up
before, but WHY does this happen. Honestly, I do not think there is any
AOTA publication stating that OT is trained in UE rehab, yet that is the
way that many therapists practice. In fact, that is the way many
therapists are trained!

Again, this just strikes as another example of an OT practice pattern
that is neither recognized nor supported at the National level.

Hum?

RC> Hi Ron I am a Cota of 10 years practice in LTC. I am in the work of
RC> starting the bridge program at [ommited]this year for OTR program. But
RC> for the past few months I may be changing my mind. I cannot help but to
RC> wonder what makes OT and PT different from each other. AS I do research
RC> on scope of practice in each field I read terms of functional, ADL
RC> retraining in self care in home, community or work integration repeated
RC> over and over again. I find these term in PT scope of practice. Goals as
RC> you know are the foundations of OT. ON many occasion as I work in the
RC> rehab room I look over in shock as the PT will perform mock kitchen act
RC> such as cones in different areas, bathroom transfers. Which make it very
RC> hard to explain to the patient the purpose of certain act to achieve
RC> function when PT has already address this. I am amazed of how many
RC> doctors will order PT for shoulder injuries. So I am trying to figure
RC> out what make OT different from PT. I wonder if years from doctors will
RC> just order PT service since the scope of practice are pretty much the
RC> same.
