Subject: And Yet the Saga continues.....

I love reading the posts. I have been a therapist for 12 years. I worked
at a hospital w/ various settings i.e. rehab, outpatient, Home health for
the first 10+ years in Washington state.

I moved in 2005 to a rural hospital in Missouri. I was so amazed on how OT
had limited itself at this place and even in the region. Most faults rested
on the past OT department, and some on P.T. department and the attending
doctors. I was put in my place to work on hands only. Well, I was appalled
and told them numerous times I am not a hand therapist. I have rocked the
boat a bit and started some new programs like Saeboflex and Interactive
Metronome. P.T. services continues to rule the roost, but I changed my
focus on getting referrals from these new programs and then eventually
getting the word out what this OT department can do. I have 2 neurologists
making specific referrals based on my "non-traditional" treatments and with
my new programs. Also, I have had an OT from a nearby city call me (just
nosing around) and stated I didn't know OT there was so intense there. (Due
to past OT's here and being a rural hospital) I have an advantage because I
have had opportunities to market the new programs and I have patients coming
to be treated 80-100 miles away. The patients are passing up the "other" OT
clinics to come to see me.

My point to all of this is I didn't realize the amount of threat of the OT
being so misunderstood. Also, P.T. profession trying to eliminate OT. (The
example with P.T. can treat and charge for ADL's) Before I thought a simple
explanation BW PT and OT was enough, but now it's a scary epidemic to get
the OT defined, so we don't become extinct. Thank you for letting me vent.
I enjoy all the posts and will try to reply more often.
