Hello All:
I don't have much marketing experience so what I'm saying may be
totally off base. But this morning, I read an assessment instrument
published by AOTA and recommended by Medicare for outpatient therapy.
The instrument is called OPTIMAL, which stands for Outpatient PT
Improvement in Movement Assessment Log. The three-page assessment
starts by asking some generic questions. The next page consists of 21
activities in which the therapist rates the patients difficulty. The
final page consists of the same 21 activities that the patient rates
their confidence. The activities include such things as:
Lying flat
Rolling over
Running
Pushing
Hopping
Climbing stairs
Carrying
First off, the OPTIMAL is vaguely similar to the the COPM. But what
strikes me the most about this instrument (other than it being
recommended by Medicare) is what are considered activities! As an OT,
I don't consider "lying flat" to be an activity. Nor do I consider any
of the other 20 items to be activities. But what about patients and
payers? They are now being exposed to a PT evaluation that only adds
more confusion to the occupation/activity debacle.
So, I advocate that AOTA start a marketing campaign that CLEARLY
identifies that there is more to life than lying flat, rolling over,
running, pushing, etc! Or, there's more to life than being able to
walk down the hallway of a hospital! Somehow, OT must get our
"product" known!
Thanks,
Ron
