"Offset door hinges" - aha! - thanx!

About the extra clearence I believe you simply get back 
whatever the open door now "eats" - so that depends - but 
the doorframe next to me right now would gain about an inch.

You also gain the advantage of not so easily scratching your 
doors with the wheelchair - so don't wait too long - I know 
I did!

PS: I just noticed that something I wrote earlier in this 
thread could be understood in more than one way. I wrote:

I meant to say:
Some ways to go for a narrower chair:
 - No pushrims. This is an option if it's only for indoor 
use.
 - No armrests, or backfitted armrests. This will fit a 
larger bottom
into a narrower chair.
(Which BTW also helps with the problem that some people find 
the backrest to be too wide and thus unsupportive, when the 
chair fits their bottom.)
