Thank you for your voice and for moving this discussion beyond 'how' and
'what' to 'why'. Blessings to you and your mother.

To all
This subject line may move us in many useful directions.
The first one that comes to mind is what is the purpose of a D N R order
and for whose benefit?
In my father's case at his own wish (his cognition was intact) the order
was clearly designed and understood so that he was not to have any
intervention the purpose of which was to prevent him from dying. The
heading of his level of care was ' comfort measures only '. This
included antibiotics and I was informed of every use of antibiotics
usually for comfort in the case of UTI. There were many specific choices
that he made on a standardized questionnaire. Since he did not wish to
be prevented from dying it was also clear that he would not be
transferred to hospital. He was in Canada and specifically on an Indian
reserve.
As a health care professional dealing with Barbara's mother, "What would
YOU do?"
