As I am new to this, I'm not exactly sure how to post this message... but here
it goes.
In response to the comments made about the disconnect between education and
practice - I am an OTD student, preparing for graduation, and I can tell you
that we are taught EXTENSIVLEY to use the work occupation. I have educated just
about all of my fieldwork supervisors about useing this term, one actaully
challenged me and I felt that I defended it well. She soon eventally stopped
commenting to me when I continued to use it. I have found the most resistance
from the older therapists in the field, especially when talking about the
doctorate program, but that is another issue.
It was commented that the problem should be solved at the AOTA level. So my
question is - are you involved? Have you participated in state and national
efforts? Sat on the board? etc.? I understand that the problem is national, but
I have witnessed many proactive efforts by local therapists who have decided to
become a part of the leadership in the state associations. I fully intend to
continue to participate and advocate with AOTA when I become a practicing
therapist. It is the students' responsibility to contunue to push the envelope
and present new idea's., I have seen what can happen if an individual becomes
involved in state associations; the issues are then more prevalent to at the
national level. Perhaps these thoughts are a little niiave of me, but I am
hopeful that my classmates and I can assist in the cause.
