Thanks for the reply Martin, but I think something else is happening.  I
didn't do anything with the modules (nor did I create any sym links to the
mysql.sock) and merely shut the web services down and restarted ( about 7
times), then, for some reason, I got my login screen.  That's the good
news...the bad news is that I can't login as any user with or without a
password.....checking the archives again....
