This is properly configured with the hostname of my actual FQDN...

What is the matter here???

Under Fedora to set the FQDN of the system you need to edit
/etc/sysconfig/network

e.g.
> cat /etc/sysconfig/network
> NETWORKING=yes
> HOSTNAME=myhost.example.com
