Pat,

I have an ATAPI internal Zip drive to go into a beige G3 mini tower. All the IDE slots are in use but there is a spare SCSI connector available in the beige box. Is there such a thing as an adapter to push into the back of the Zip drive to allow a connection?

Back in 1999 Black*Fire Technology in Queensland made a little device called an IDE-to-SCSI converter that turned bare IDE devices into items addressable on a SCSI bus.

The device I remember seeing was designed for 5.25" bays (I gather it was first envisioned as a tool for adding cheap CD-ROM drives to machines like the 61xx-series Macs which didn't all come with a CD built-in) but worked with 3.5" devices presuming there was room in the available bay to fit the converter card.

The card also required a power connection of its own (ie, they weren't powered by the cable attached to the device they are plugged in to) and the controller circuitry used on the card limited attached HDs to no larger than 8.24 Gb. (This latter limitation was to be addressed by a new version of the card then in development: I never saw a later version of the card but I also stopped paying attention since I had no need for such a card after 1999.)

When I looked at these beasties the cards cost $100.00. Black*Fire are still in business at <http://blackfire.com.au/> but it doesn't look like the IDE-to-SCSI converter card is still available.

However, they do still sell (although it's listed as EOL) the ACARD SCSIDE BridgeSmart 5.25" SCSI Case. This is an external case with a power supply and the SCSI-to-IDE converter noted above. This kit makes it fairly simple to add a single IDE device to a SCSI-equipped Mac (or PC or Unix box) that has no internal bays and/or IDE controllers available to take said device. That kit cost $240.00 back in the day but is now selling for $39.00.

See <http://blackfire.com.au/index.php?level1=3&level2=1878> for the Black*Fire page listing the 'converters' they sell (including the BridgeSmart) and <http://blackfire.com.au/product-detail.php?no=1089> for the pop-up window giving the BridgeSmart particulars.

[Standard Disclaimer: I've no commercial or personal relationship with the Black*Fire folk.]

Hope this is vaguely useful.

Regards,

Brian Forte.
