All he's trying to do is get the audio in to play through the audio
out, it's not like he's trying to get a 540 to decode MP3s.
And from memory, Sndsampler should run fine on that system if you get
the appropriate (68k) version.
It's been a while since I've played with OS 8, seems strange to me
that the CP doesn't have playthrough. If you've got the OS 8 install
CD, have a look for the old system 7 separate control panels for
monitors and sound. From memory, they were included on some of the
CDs as an alternative.
Otherwise, if you've got another Mac running 7.something, try
borrowing the Sound control panel from there. That might work.
