It sounds to me as though your DNS settings are either missing or incorrect. Go to your TCP/IP panel in System Preferences/Network and see what is there in regard to a DNS server address.
Your ISP should be able to tell you what their DNS server address is. It will be something like 144.140.70.30 (which is the one that Bigpond has for its ADSL users). Any valid DNS server will do, but is probably best to use the one provided by your own ISP.
