Thanks for that info - my google 'foo' must be defective at the moment. It seems as though the PPA aspect is already taken care of. I think the idea of getting owfs upstream, certainly in debian/ubuntu is a great idea. I'll try and contact the PPA maintainers below and see if this can be progressed, though I'm not quite sure of the mechanism.
