And of course you can simply run a separate wire back for each device
and use a port expander such as the pcf8574.  Downsides: more wire, no
longer able to distinguish broken wire from open switch  Upsides:
cheap, more electrically robust (?), can source more power for
individual devices.

Remember a cat5 cable has 8 conductors.
