The 16bit A/D choice was pretty arbitrary. The speed penalty is small and
the simplicity of not having a knob for resolution was compelling. I later
discovered that the DS2450 really only generates 8-bit resolution. So you
could put any garbage in the final 4 bits and still be ahead of the game.
