Ages ago I had an eeepc also, you're right: compiling there is almost 
impossible..

Except you had installed Ubuntu with LVM support so you can merge the 
internal filespace with a SD card (the Eee PC had SD card reader as far 
my memory serves).

Hint: get another PC with Ubuntu 10.04. Download owfs-2.7p33 (current 
versions are fubar, unfortunately). "sudo apt-get install checkinstall". 
In the OWFS directory: "./configure" and "sudo checkinstall make 
install". Answer the questions and the result will be a .deb which is 
ready to be moved on the Eee PC for installation (I hope).
