What do you mean by "owserver went boom"

In theory, the shorted 1-wire but should be tolerated by the 1-wire system
-- it should just report a bus short.

It's possible that shorting causes electrical problems with the USB system
because the bus is powered from either the serial line or directly from the
USB line, and the short may be propagated upstream.

That shouldn't cause a crash, so I'm curious about that aspect.
