With an X10 lighting system in place, my g/f bought a DMX controller for xmas a few years ago thinking that I'd use that for the garden automation. Unsatisfied with X10, not so much for unreliability but because it's rubbish for any kind of acceptable aesthetic scene setting, and finding cheap soundlab branded 4 channel DMX dimmer packs for around 50 GBP a time, I tried one and then bought several as they worked out as a great replacement for the X10 kit that I ripped out as soon as I could. After bridging the X10 stick-a-switch remotes to DMX, and keeping the motion sensors in a few places, I had nice scene setting for a budget price and probably less than the X10 kit was. Reliability permitting, X10 is fine for an easy way to controlling the occasional device here and there, and I have an X10 relay for cycling the power on the router in the loft if connectivity is lost to the outside world as there's no one in the house to do so themselves (we need to rent it out). In the current place I use DMX for lights and for controlling the underfloor heating zones via a 4 channel dimmer pack and a relay for a 5th zone, and definitely recommend it as a useful network to have available. 1-wire works out fine for the 10 temp sensors we currently have.
