In a discussion on Maxim site, someone mentions a substitute made from
other components
http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/2909/t/uc

"As far as the application note describing the replacement... It's not
really worth waiting for, I've seen the preliminary version. It basically
uses a DS2408, two resistors, a DS1811, and two unspecified analog
switching chips; and then they add insult to injury by pointing out that
the builtin ESD protection of the 2409 has not been covered yet and needs
to be taken care of by separate components."
Maxim's circuit was an attempt to maintain compatibility with the one wire command set. I took a look and it seemed not worth the trouble.

A much better analog switch could be used for this function and would lend itself to more than 2 channels. Perhaps some consideration might be given to owfs supporting a custom command for a new/proposed hardware device that would implement a hub? If this is possible, I could work up something on the bench, although it would undoubtedly be more costly than using the now gone 2409. And if this can work, maybe a multi-channel 32 bit counter is another opportunity?
