There are 2 parts to the answer.
1. -85C usually indicates an error in the slave making the measurement.
OWFS knows -85 is an probably an error and retries the measurement
automatically twice again before returning -85. You said you used another
way of testing with success, can you describe it further?

2. OWFS "polls" by demand only. The request for a reading triggers the
temperature measurement. There is a catch -- caching for efficiency.
Typically you'll get the same result for 15 seconds before the next actual
measurement. You can force a new measurement by reading the /uncached value.

i.e.
/10.12343243223/temperature
v.s.
/uncached/10.12343243223/temperature
