You also need a resistor (or inductor) in front of the divider to
avoid turn on transients killing your LED.

personally, I would just buy a low power switchmode led driver such
as:
http://www.suntekstore.com/goods-14002514-10_x_580-600ma_constant_current_regulated_1x3w_led_driver_.html
and use that instead.
