I have a Louis Swart LCD it has been no trouble for a few years now.
I have used it with three different LCD displays.
Since you mention that you can set the backlight ok and read the buttons I
suspect that your display is either wired incorrectly, incompatible, or
broken.
I assume you have the instruction manual which goes with the adapter, I
think the instructions in there are clear enough to make the display do
something.
It could be that the display is working but you cannot see the pixels due
to the contrast being unset, have you tried adjusting the tiny
potentiometer on the board.
Have you any other device you could check the display with, an arduino
perhaps.
