To be perfectly legal, contact Maxim. They will sell you a family code -- I
don't know the price.
Most "squatters" take a code above 0x8F. Choose one that's unused.

Your project sounds great. I wouldn't be too tied to the DS2409 design
unless backwards compatibility is important.
