I hope you succeed in getting people to side-grade their computers to a Linux distro from Windows, rather than buying a new device with Windows 11.
I wonder, is it within the oxlug.org remit to also talk about ChromeOS Flex as an alternative? It is designed for older PCs and Macs, rather than Chromebooks. I have found that the move to ChromeOS can work well if users have their data stored on either OneDrive or Google Drive, and they have a head start if they have a Gmail account and even better if they use an Android phone. Obviously, best if their computing needs aren’t too strenuous, but the further option of running Linux within ChromeOS offers access to lots of apps and browsers outside of the Google environment. The installation from a ChromOS Flex thumb drive takes just 20 minutes. It is easy to create one. So it would be a viable offering at a community event. But the user must confirm their data is backed up and preferably accessible online before diving in, as the installation wipes the hard drive; no advanced partitioning or dual booting like a Linux install.
