Hi,

If this is XP, you can try a Recovery Install. This should preserve user 
accounts, but you may need to reinstall some applications as well as service 
packs/patches. This is not the same as Recovery Console. It's where you choose 
to install Windows again, but it detects that there is an existing installation 
and offers to do a repair on it.

David, Ken, none of the links seem to help. I tried to get to the XP recovery 
console to CHKDSK but I have no idea what the administrator password is and 
after 3 failures I just have to start all over again and waste more time 
guessing. The funny thing is that I originally installed this XP for my friend 
about 4-5 years ago, and I can't even get into it. I'm about to get the 
screwdriver out...
