I was all excited this morning because I planned to make my ex-development
box run free ESXi and virtualise my web server and domain controller. I
haven't used ESX before. My install stops with this:

vmkctl.HostCtlException Unable to load module /usr/lib/vmware/vkmod/vmfs3:
Failure

I see hundreds of hits on this problems, but so far I can find no clear
explanations of what to do (if anything). Some people hint that if you hit
this then your hardware will not work with ESXi and you should give up.
Others hint that disabling stuff in the BIOS will get it working, but others
claim that doesn't work. I tried reading a few compatibility documents, but
they're mostly Unix kernel gibberish to me.

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/290249 explains how to Alt+F1 to get to
a command prompt and run esxcfg-nics -l where I see no NIC entries. fdisk -l
also shows no disks (but I don't know what I'm expected to see).

I have a feeling I'm going to waste a whole day failing to get ESXi working,
so before I do so I thought I'd ask if someone has been through this and has
suggestions.
