Kirsten No, you don't need to publish it to the market place. However you do need to purchase monodroid unfortunately. Then all you need to do is to put the device and your computer on the same wifi network (required for debugging) and connect the device to the pc via usb (make sure you install the relevant drivers - this is for deployment of the app).

Seriously, we've found the only way to do Android development (using monodroid at least) is with a real device. We've got a Galaxy Tab and a Galaxy S phone that seem to work fine for debugging.
