Are you sending these files over HTTP? Doesn't HTTP provide the ability to 
compress files between server and client?

Some Zip files of DLL files made with pkzip (or the shell) are with the WCF 
service, the Silverlight 5 app lazily loads them and adds the assemblies. There 
are some quite large charting DLLs that make the SL app loading horribly slow 
if they're in the XAP. The background loading works nicely and isn't much code.

It was at the receiving end of one of the zip files as a blob that I found 
DotNetZip couldn't handle them.
