I had a quick look at some pages and docs on this. It seems to be dependent on the IIS version, having the compression module installed and the client side being "compression-compatible browsers". I don't know how all this affects a WCF service and SL client. I'd have to do lots more research to see if the burden of doing compression could safely and completely moved to the environment.
