Actually, I have noticed that doing a search and/or search and replace (via Ctrl-Alt-F) finds nothing if you have no file open. Its a bit like its doing a search from the current folder but if no file is open then it has no idea where the current folder is. Either that or the current folder is some temp folder somewhere randomly and search can't find anything there.
Try your search with a file open. (any file in your solution). Then it will have a known starting point. Just a thought.
