Seems to me that since I moved back here from the UK to escape Thatcherism,
many of her gov'ts policies have followed me back to Oz with a delay of
about 10 years.
I too have noticed the similarity with not only VAT but also the USA tax -
added on at the check outs and varying in each state.
Have a look at Thatchers record and I think that's a pretty good indication
of what is intended to come here in Oz with our current conservative
government. (Among other things, her govt ran public health into the
ground...sound familiar?) Lobbying is needed desperately...good luck with

If this is like our VAT in the UK - this is not paid on medical services in
the UK. However they may be different taxes.
