Dear Pete, Trish, Mary & Listners,
I understand the practical concerns Trish raised which I'm sure can be
negotiated and worked out if ?when it happens (I'm sure NZCOM would be happy
to discuss how they went about working out the details). Mary I think how NZ
got around the ICM conditions, is that non-midwife members of the NZCOM are
associate or affiliate members and I think consumer groups join as such e.g.
NZ Home birth association, NZ parents centre.
The whole issue I believe is fundimental to the midwife-woman partnership,
when women are viewed as separate from midwives, both "sides" loose, but when
we are working together to achieve our goals we are more powerful . If it
works so well in birthing why cant it work as well in the political arena?
Partnership should mean all parties are involved in the descision making
which ultimately affects them, this cannot happen when one partner is
excluded. "Women need midwives need women" (like the T- shirt says) this
applies to politics as much as any other aspect of the woman midwife
partnership!
You will certainly have my support Pete when you bring the issue up in Hobart
at the AGM.
Cheers!
 Helen Brown Melbourne.
