KEMH Raine study did recommend that 2 ultrasounds a pregnancy was enough unless really indicated for treatment options.
Hi Mary,
I was actually involved in that study, with my first child Ryan, born 10 years ago at KEMH (on the anniversary of the National Caesarean Awareness Day). I was asked to participate in the study and then, when I agreed, I was randomly placed within 2 groups. One group received lots of ultrasounds, the other group received just the usual amount. Thankfully (how amazingly naive I was to participate – but hey, my c/section was also due to naivety) I was put into the group that had the least amount of ultrasounds.
My son, Ryan, has Tourette’s Syndrome, ADD, OCD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) as well as 3 other diagnosed problems – can’t remember their names off-hand. He is also left-handed, and has fine-motor co-ordination skill problems, etc. When I read the news broadcasts this morning I began to wonder what I had committed my son to by being involved in the KEMH study... Paranoia fears made me wonder if my ‘usual ultrasounds’ were stronger than normal. But I just thank God that I was a part of the study that had the least ultrasounds, because if I had been in the other group I would have totally freaked at today’s news re ultrasound affects.
The Raine study has so far basically found that the babies in the group with the most ultrasounds were born with a lower birth weight than those in the group that had less ultrasounds. It has also been checking asthma rates between the two groups and allergy rates, and the professionals involved have asked us to donate our children’s first teeth for analysis. Sadly, though, the study has sort of petered out, possibly due to lack of funding, as the contact over the last ten years has become rather sporadic. Come to think of it I haven’t heard from them in probably 3 years... Maybe it will be revived with the current interest in ultrasounds and their long-term effects. I’ll let you know.

Too many Gods;
so many creeds,
Too many paths
that wind and
wind,
When just the art
of being kind
Is all the sad
world needs...
