The Ob. I went to (in Perth) during my second pregnancy had a routine at
every visit...

Wait in his reception area for a looooonnnnng time, then get called in to
his office. Straight on to the scales for a weight check, blood pressure
cuff to check BP, then up on the table for an ultrasound. Back off the
table, "Any questions? - See you in 'x' weeks."

Honest to God, I would be in there 5 minutes max, after waiting for approx'
an hour each time. I always forgot all my questions too, until I was halfway
to the car!

One day his US machine was on the blink, and he said to me "You'll probably
like that I have to use this thing (fetoscope) won't you?" He was obviously
quite aware that his use of the US machine seemed excessive... Maybe a
couple of clients had responded positively to his use of 'basic' technology
- a bit of hands-on stuff!

Anyway, after a first experience of trusting the public system I had decided
to employ a professional Obstetrician for my second pregnancy (to retain
more control - silly me!) It was only during my third pregnancy when
situations beyond my control guided me to a homebirth with an independent
midwife (after 2 previous c/sections) that I discovered a system that fully
supported me and allowed me the right to maintain some control of how my
child would be birthed, and where... Another story.

Too many Gods;
            so many creeds,
            Too many paths
             that wind and
                 wind,
            When just the art
             of being kind
             Is all the sad
              world needs...
