Dear Jackie
They don't need to slap the wee one on the bum. If in doubt of a baby not being alert enough, a quick jab (of  vit. k) gives them a shock into reality. Is this true midwives? Has this become a modern day ritual? My understanding is that Vitamin k was only recommended for traumatic births, but then the powers that 'be' couldn't decide on the correct definition of a traumatic birth so it was decided all births are traumatic and high risk and should be treated as so.
Jackie, sorry to get of the topic, I've had an interest in vit. k and find it difficult to get many sided answers.

Kindest Regards
