Hi Everyone,
I've been having discussions with a few of my colleagues as to what is an appropriate amount to charge as the second midwife. I'm currently trying to set a consistent schedule of fees for my practice (as it currently varies with the primary midwife I'm working with at the time) and I was wondering if any of you would be willing to share with me what you charge as a second midwife or those who work with you as a second midwife charge, for antenatal/postnatal consultations conducted on behalf of the primary midwife, attending the birth planning meeting and attending the birth, etc.
I will appreciate any information that you are willing to share with me and will keep all responses confidential of course. I do realise that ultimately I will have to charge what I feel comfortable with. I'm just new to this business of charging for my services and as yet don't feel comfortable!
Thanks,
Andrea Bilcliff.
Hi Andrea
If you have a ‘back-up’ midwife with whom you work closely, you usually pay her $65 per visit (more if excessive kilometers to travel).
This is assuming that you have already quoted a ‘total package fee’ for pregnancy care provided by yourself and the couple understand that there may be a colleague doing an odd visit if you are unavailable.
If you call in another midwife to assist you at a labour / birth, or the couple requests the presence of two midwives, they need to understand that they will be responsible for paying that midwife at an hourly rate of $60. Your midwife colleague needs to invoice the couple separately for any services rendered.
That’s the way I work it.
Cheers
Jan
