Dr Sarah Buckley has written a lovely article which appears in the latest "Mothering" magazine citing Michel Odent and giving a very full account of the intricate play of the different hormones (including oxytocin) during each stage of birth - what occurs without and with intervention. The article is entitled "Ecstatic Birth" and it's great.

For more wonderful information about third stage possibilities...see"Lotus Birth" - edited by Shivam Rachana (email [EMAIL PROTECTED] ).
Lotus birth is giving birth without clamping or cutting the cord, simply leaving baby and placenta attached until the cord dries up and separates from the baby. Hundreds of lotus births have taken place in America, Australia and New Zealand - at home, in birth centres and in hospital labour wards (even for caesarian births - which means the baby has a lot more of it's own blood available to it after a traumatic birth experience).
