I know of many women who have eaten placenta, as medicine, for postnatal
depression.

There is also a belief (myth?) that eating the placenta reduces postnatal bleeding, and - apparantly - some animals eat the placenta to reduce the risk of their babies being attacked/ eaten by predators who are attracted by the smell of the placenta.
