Dear Rose
Thank you for this information
I will add it to my list

You have not indicated that the women get continuity of a midwife, In fact you have implied this is not the case and that this lack of 1-1 midwifery care exists in the other Vic places!!

As I said previously I will add an explanation that few Or no Australian hospital based models give 1-1 midwifery continuous carer and some have other restrictions!!

The inequity and discrimination against women and midwives, if not the consequential hurt being caused to the women, babies and our families across this country should have every one  in politicians offices demanding federal-state funding of NMAP so we DO have an Australian model of midwifery care!!

Dear Denise

The Mercy Family Birth Centre (FBC) is a midwifery model of care. Women receive their antenatal care, education & postnatal care from a team of midwives. All women see an obstetrician for 1 antenatal visit (usually around 16 weeks) & again if any complications arise during their pregnancy.  The women thus get to meet the midwives throughout their pregnancy (& vice versa).

This model of care is very similar to that offered by the Royal Women’s FBC, Monash Medical Centre’s FBC & The Angliss Birth Centre.

The Mercy FBC midwives, although not actively promoting waterbirth, encourage the use water as a method of pain relief in labor. Policies are in place to deal with an unexpected waterbirth.

Dear rose

Can you please explain the midwifery input or relationship with the woman and the doctors in the Mercy family birth centre in Melbourne as I know of another which has the same name and it is not a midwifery model of care??

Having waterbiths or other aids or freedoms to move does not a birth centre make!

Dear Denise,

Could you add to your list the Family Birth Centre at the Mercy Hospital For Women in East Melbourne. They also now allow water births.  Also, the Hawthorn Birth Centre is still open as I heard of a woman having a lovely water birth there only a few weeks ago.

Dear Denise,

Just wanted to let you know that Camden's birth centre has not closed.  However, mother's now birth their babies at Campbelltown in the birth centre room.  The main clinic and midwives still work mainly from Camden.

Yours Sonia
