This
is the response I received from Brian McKenna at Hope Island Insurance.
Brian was the first person to obtain professional indemnity for midwives and he
had to withdraw when Lloyds of London decided not to provide the policy
anymore. He passed us onto Guild Insurance who took over for a short time
then withdrew from the midwifery market in August 2001. I wrote to both of
these insurance companies recently telling them of our plight since our
insurance was stopped and asked their assistance in obtaining insurance from
some other source. It seems that there is still no avenue
yet.

I have been waiting on a response from London, and
in the early hours of this morning I was advised that those underwriters who may
look at the cover would probably be wanting a guaranteed risk premium of several
hundred thousand AUD $ + charges, broker fees etc. My contact advises one
off risks would not be considered. I know this is not the news you want to
hear, but on past experience the financial requirements, plus I suspect a very
large excess, would be far more than we were ever able to achieve in the years
when we had a terrific (my words!) facility available, and our take up rate
never really reached the targets I had committed to. The market was also very
different then,as were the people we dealt with!
Janeece and I have very fond memories of those days
and the many wonderful and dedicated midwives we got to know so well, we are
sorry there is little more we can do.
We wish you every success in your endeavours, and
your career and pray that with all of your problems that you have a wonderful
and happy and safe Christmas
Brian & Janeece
