Student Midwives gain consent from the women, in most cases the supervising midwife would gain consent as the women often feel bad about saying no directly to the student. The woman is aware that the midwife is a student, aware that they are learning, usually aware whether they are beginning in there learning or at what level they are, aware that if the student midwife is not confident in their findings that the supervising midwife may need to check the examination (to determine the findings and teach the student), they are advised that refusal is their right and that we as midwives are aware of the very personal nature of the examination and understand completely if they do not wish the student to perform the VE. In my experience most women are aware that the only way for the student to gain the practical skills is to actually perform the examination and give consent. If the woman is at all unsure or hesitant then the examination is not performed. Other issues such as how the women is coping, what stage they are at and what there plan for labour and birth is are taken into consideration.
To learn we must experience. Unfortunately due to the very personal and intimate nature of our practice in midwifery this is difficult at times.
