I have seen the situation where the parents didn't want the children in the labour ward during the actual birth, but within minutes after the bith, the older children were the FIRST visitors and helped dress the baby, hold him,took photos and told the midwife the names they had chosen etc.

Can anyone give me some help with strategies to assist mothers and fathers who are having babies in a new relationship. In a current antenatal class I have some couples in new relationships. These parents are wondering whether there are ways of helping the father's children from a previous relationship cope with a new baby. Some concerns are about the manner in which these children will react and/or accept a new step brother/sister. In these cases the mother-to-be has a good relationship with the stepchildren.
