Re: step children
Marian,
Being a first time mother, I wasn't sure how my labour would go so
my step daughters did not attend the birth, however they attended an
ultrasound with us and a couple of my antenatal visits. I explained
to them I wasn't sure of my labour needs but as soon as Nicola was
born, my husband went and picked them up. I will never forget their
reactions when they first met their sister, it still brings a tear to my eye.
The photos of this are just beautiful. Hayley and Tegan gave Nicola
her first birth. Five and a half years later they still have a wonderful
relationship with Nicola and she just idolises her big sisters.
Encourage the families to do what feels right for them.
They quite intimidated the GP when they came with me for Nicola's
first immunisation, talk about protective big sisters'!

I have seen the situation where the parents didn't want the children in the
labour ward during the actual birth, but within minutes after the bith, the
older children were the FIRST visitors and helped dress the baby, hold
him, took photos and told the midwife the names they had chosen etc.
