I doubt there is a practising midwife alive who has not found themselves faced with just this situaltion, and the feelings that accompany it, both at the time and afterwards. I know it taught me some difficult, but valuable lessons and perhaps one of the hardest things about it is talking with the woman afterwards. I remember one of the most useful things was to go back over the whole thing in my mind and try and remember what else was happening (not just the VEs and how they were done or not done). I have found reflection and discussion with peers to be most beneficial and use the reflection and their comments constructively to guide my practice - still do. Hug for you - Lynne
PS I work in a hospital too!

Okay, so I'm not a home birth midwife, but I do believe in women's bodies and abilities. I also have had a run of unexpected outcomes. Just the other day I took over, primip in good labour, 7cms, head at spines.  Wanting to push an hour later, pushed to urge, no progress so a quick feel with her on her hands and knees. Could feel head about2cms in. Kept on pushing to urge. Sat on loo 1.5 hrs later. VE while there  7cms with a very puffy anterior lip!   Four hours, no progress and I had caused further complications.  Over to delivery for an epidural, by the time we got the analectic the anterior lip had reduced(head down) and she had dilated about 0.5.. Finally had a C/S at 9pm. I donot encourage women to push, but to go with their bodies. Weal, maybe next time I'll make her get over on her back, do a invasive VE,(not a gentle 'feel' while she is in a comfy position, nor ask her to have a feel) and just make sure she is fully.

Dear Jan<
I am glad i am not alone i also have had an unusual run of difficult births and complicated deliveries> Just home now at 2am after looking after a primip all day she turned out to have a face presentation and it failed to turn to the anterior. so she has had an emerg Luscs which makes 4 emerg LUSCS for me in less than a month...A very high ratio..
:((( Feeling drained myself ...hopefully this period of time will pass and we shall both have a magnificent run of beautiful births in the near furture....
Yours in Midwifery
