PROJECT TITLE: "What is the effect of sterile water injections on the experience of pain for women in labour?"
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Kerry Peart PROJECT SUMMARY: This clinical study is a collaborative research project to be undertaken at two rural maternity sites investigating the effectiveness and acceptability of the use of sterile water as a pain relieving measure for back pain during labour. Over a period of 12 months Colac Area Health will recruit 30 women and Wimmera Health Care will recruit 70 women who are willing to participate in the study and offer those women sterile water injections in the Michaelis rhomboid during first stages of their labour. Effectiveness of the technique will be ascertained by the use of a visual analogue scale assessed prior to and following labour. Satisfaction with the technique will be measured in a follow-up satisfaction survey given to women 2 days after the birth.
